Who serves the Upper Valley's older adults

Windsor County is covered by Senior Solutions, the council on aging for southeastern Vermont, which serves Windham and Windsor counties from 56 Main Street in Springfield and answers a helpline at 866-673-8376.

Orange County is covered by the Central Vermont Council on Aging, whose helpline is 802-477-1364.

That split means two neighbouring families in the same valley can be routed to different agencies, so the first call should be to the statewide helpline, 1-800-642-5119, with the exact town.

Who qualifies for Meals on Wheels in the southeast

Senior Solutions says anyone 60 or over is eligible for Meals on Wheels who cannot obtain or prepare meals, temporarily or permanently, because of a physical, mental or cognitive condition that requires help to leave home.

The programme is funded by the Older Americans Act, Senior Solutions, local meal providers and donors, and the intake line is 802-465-4293.

The same council promotes the well-being and dignity of older adults in Windham and Windsor counties through meals, transportation, advocacy and help finding services, so a Windsor County family with a question about benefits starts with the same office as one in Brattleboro.

The Bugbee Senior Center in White River Junction

The Bugbee Senior Center, at 262 North Main Street, is open weekdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and serves Hartford, Norwich, Thetford and North Hartland.

It lists weekday lunches, nutrition programmes, fitness, recreation, education, public computers, social services, transportation, paralegal help and income-tax preparation, and its number is 295-9068.

Its Meals on Wheels go to homebound people in White River Junction, Hartford, North Hartland, Norwich and Thetford, delivered by volunteers, and the centre hosts Hartford community meals at noon.

Senior centers, rides and hospitals across the river valley

The South Royalton Area Senior Citizen Center, in the Royalton Academy Building on Route 14, serves Bethel, Royalton, Sharon and Strafford and is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Orange East Senior Center on Waits River Road in Bradford is open Monday to Friday, and the Randolph center closes on Fridays.

Tri-Valley Transit's Orange and North Windsor region offers rides to medical appointments, meal sites and shopping.

Gifford Medical Center in Randolph is a critical access hospital with 24-hour emergency care.

Across the river in New Hampshire

The Upper Valley straddles the Connecticut River, and families often weigh Vermont settings against homes in New Hampshire, where Dartmouth Health in Lebanon is the regional referral hospital.

On the Vermont side, Mt.

Ascutney Hospital in Windsor, Springfield Hospital and Gifford Medical Center in Randolph serve the towns.

Licences, Medicaid and Choices for Care apply only to Vermont settings, so a New Hampshire address changes which state licenses the home and which programme can pay for it.
