One council on aging for three counties

The Northeast Kingdom Council on Aging has been the designated area agency on aging for Caledonia, Orleans and Essex counties since 1974.

Its helpline is 800-642-5119, it keeps walk-in hours at 481 Summer Street in St.

Johnsbury, and it takes appointments at 5452 U.S.

Route 5 in Newport and, by appointment, at the health centers in Hardwick and Island Pond.

Meals on Wheels, community meals, Medicare counselling, benefits enrolment, case management and caregiver support all run through it.

Its offices are open weekdays from 8 to 4 and close for an hour at noon, which is worth knowing before a family drives an hour to find a locked door.

Community lunches, rides and home health across the Kingdom

The council contracts with a dozen community meal sites across the three counties, open to adults 60 and over and their spouses.

Five are in Caledonia County, five in Orleans County and two in Essex County, at Gilman and at Sunrise Manor in Island Pond.

Rural Community Transportation, based in Lyndonville, runs public transit across roughly 90 towns in northern Vermont, plus a programme for older adults and people with disabilities.

Home health has a geographic catch.

Caledonia Home Health Care and Hospice covers Caledonia County, southern Essex County and Greensboro, so households in Newport, Derby, Island Pond or Canaan need a different agency, and the council can say which one currently covers an address.

Residential care and nursing homes in the Kingdom

None of the three counties has a licensed assisted living residence.

What other states call assisted living is done here largely through small residential care homes, most licensed at Level III.

Examples are Canterbury Inn and Parkway House in St.

Johnsbury, Maple Lane in Barton and Michaud Memorial Manor in Derby Line.

Loch Lomond Care Home in North Concord is the only licensed care facility in Essex County.

The region has six nursing homes: Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville, the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in St.

Johnsbury, Maple Lane in Barton, Union House in Glover, Greensboro Nursing Home and Bel Aire Center in Newport.

There is none in Essex County, so most Essex families look to Lyndonville or St.

Johnsbury.
