The Central Vermont Council on Aging and its senior centers

The Central Vermont Council on Aging answers a helpline at 802-477-1364, or 1-800-642-5119 from outside its area, and lists the senior centers and meal sites of the region on one page.

Among them are the Montpelier Senior Activity Center on Barre Street, the Waterbury Area Senior Center on Stowe Street, the Twin Valley Senior Center in East Montpelier and Mad River Seniors in Waitsfield.

Smaller centers do a lot of the work.

The Quin-Town Center in the Hancock Town Hall has served and delivered meals in five communities for more than 40 years, and the Orange East Senior Center in Bradford is open Monday to Friday.

What the council offers beyond meals

The Central Vermont Council on Aging says its mission is to support Central Vermonters to age with dignity and choice, and to respect the wish of people to age at home.

Besides meals it lists exercise classes, technology training, creative-aging programmes, help applying for 3SquaresVT food benefits, Medicare counselling, caregiver resources and volunteer roles.

It also points older adults to GetSetUp, a library of free online classes, and produces short cooking videos, called Tasty Bites, with Central Vermont Television in Barre.

Meals, rides and home health from Lamoille to Orange County

Meals on Wheels of Lamoille County, in Morrisville, prepares over 1,100 meals a week for delivery Tuesday to Friday.

In Montpelier the FEAST programme alone serves over 350 meals a week.

Which hospital a family ends up using

Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin serves most of Washington County, Copley Hospital in Morrisville serves Lamoille County, and Orange County families look to Gifford Medical Center in Randolph or across the river to Dartmouth Health in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

That split matters when a stay in hospital leads to home health or a rehabilitation bed, because the discharge planners know the agencies and homes in their own county best.
