The Waterbury Area Senior Center and Meals on Wheels
It serves Waterbury, Duxbury, Bolton, Moretown and Middlesex, and its congregate lunch is served every weekday from 12:00 to 1:00 in the dining room, with fresh salad, fresh-baked bread, a drink and dessert.
Through its Meals on Wheels programme the centre also delivers hot lunches to homebound seniors, with frozen meals for the weekend, and it says each meal costs $12.32 to produce.
It also runs blood-pressure and foot-care clinics, dominoes and movies, and it does all of this with only two staff members and volunteers.
Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice and the two hospitals
Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, at 600 Granger Road in Barre (802-223-1878), is the county's home health and hospice agency and also serves towns in Orange County.
Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin is the county's hospital, with the state's psychiatric care hospital next to it.
Washington County has 17 licensed settings clustered in Barre, Montpelier, Berlin, Northfield and Waterbury; a household in the smaller towns of the Mad River Valley or Cabot will usually look at one of these, so distance from a relative is the practical constraint.

The Barre Area Senior Center, on 802-595-5277, draws adults 50 and over from Barre, Berlin, Montpelier and a ring of small towns.
The Montpelier Senior Activity Center is open weekdays from 9 to 4, the Twin Valley Senior Center in East Montpelier at 4583 U.S.
Route 2 serves Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and the Waterbury Area Senior Center at 14 Stowe Street is open weekdays from 9 to 4.
In the Mad River Valley, Mad River Seniors in Waitsfield prepares Meals on Wheels and two community meals a week, and it helps finance a free ride service for seniors.
